You Are John!

I have a student who is a twin. An identical twin. Like for real identical. Same voice. Same face. Same walk. I.D.E.N.T.I.C.A.L! You would think this is a fact I would know almost a month into the school year. But, I didn't. And when you don't know things like that, things like this happen...

The other morning one of my students came up to me and said, "Is John in your class?" John is a fairly common name so it didn't strike me as odd that his name is John as well. I said, "Yes, John Doe is in this class." He said, "No, John Black?" I thought for a second and said..."You are John!" Then, he informed that he was his twin brother. Oh...that would make more sense than you asking for yourself.
(Names changed for obvious reasons)

Several of my students live in their own little worlds. And by own little world, I mean they have conversations and sing songs constantly to themselves. I often catch myself fussing at students for talking and realize they are talking to themselves. The other day I asked a student to please come out of his own little world and join us in math class. A few seconds later he asked me if I had my own little world. I told him I enjoy this world just fine. Then, he offered to make me my own little world that I would like better. Thanks...??

A girl in my class asked me the other day if she could go to guidance to call home because her feet were cold. I asked why her feet were cold and she told me because she didn't have shoes on and the floor was cold. (My room is freezing when the AC is blowing). The obvious next question was where are your shoes. She said they broke so she threw them away. WHAT?!? Yes, they both broke on the stairs at the same time and she threw them away and was walking around barefooted. This was in 3rd period so she had not gone up or down any stairs in 2 hours!! I sent her to guidance to figure out a solution. But, she didn't tell anyone in guidance that she was barefooted; she just called home and came back to class with no shoes. Her new shoes showed up a little later...luckily before she had to go in the lunch room with no shoes.

I'm tellin' ya...you never know what to expect from these kids!
